Countryside Management
In Shrewsbury we are truly fortunate to have so many open spaces and a local nature reserve, we have six sites which a local farmer grazes his cattle for conservation grazing. The team maintain the fences and install pasture pumps in the brook for drinking water.
There are some areas that are left to promote and encourage bee and butterfly activity, our countryside team also engage in planting wildflowers, which provide pollinators with food, shelter, and places to breed throughout the year.
We try to protect biodiversity wherever we can, which is why we try to promote the creation of naturalised and conservation areas, which creates comfortable living conditions for certain species, and it also means we can reduce our use of mowers, lowering their environmental impact. All Councillors have been given land maps of their wards to suggest places that areas could be left natural.
Our team has also installed new bird boxes at Greenfields Recreation Ground and maintain ones at Mousecroft Community Woodland and Raby Crescent. These bird boxes provide shelter to our winged friends, which augments the diversity of species.
We also have volunteers who aid us with nature recovery by partaking in litter picking, tree protection, tree surrounds building and coppicing.
